About Us

Our Philosophy

Our practice philosophy centers on providing personal service to each individual client and pet. We strive to meet needs and exceed expectations at each stage of care.

We feel we have been successful in accomplishing this goal, as evidenced by the many families who have been trusting in our care for generations.

Our Facility

Our practice is the oldest continuously operating veterinary facility in the Pittsburgh area, having been founded by the late Dr. Werntz in 1919.

Nestled on several tree-lined acres in Penn Hills, the hospital overlooks the intersection of Verona and Mt. Carmel roads. Although the area has become more urbanized over the years, the original pastoral feeling of our property has been maintained.

The hospital cannot be seen from the road, but our sign can be seen on the main entrance driveway. We're on the east side of Verona Road, just north of its juncture with Graham Boulevard, across the street from Transmission by Lucille and the Giant Eagle shopping center.

A secondary entrance is on the north side of Mt. Carmel Road, east of its juncture with Verona Road. There is no sign at this entrance, but it is the first driveway on the left when traveling east on Mt. Carmel Road.

Our Staff

David L. Burghard, DVM has been attending to the needs of our clients and patients since 1971. Dr. Burghard is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He is also a veteran of the Armed Services, having served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps during the Vietnam conflict.

He has been happily married since 1969 to his wife, MaryAnn. She is a 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is a Registered Nurse and provides Veterinary Technician Services for the hospital.

As lifelong pet owners, the Burghards understand that providing the best care for your pets enhances your entire family.

In fact, their Black Labrador Retriever, Jazz, often leads the welcome wagon for patients, along with clinic cats Buffy and Junior.

Receptionists Cathy, Gloria and Susie, and Jay who is in charge of maintenance, provide excellent service and help ensure that everything runs smoothly for our clients.

Our Schedule

Routine surgical procedures are performed Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

After hours or if Dr. Burghard is unavailable, emergency services are provided by Allegheny Veterinary Emergency Trauma Specialists (AVETS) at 412-373-4200 and the Veterinary Emergency Clinic at 412-492-9855.
